From The Editor's Desk
As this year speeds ahead, we would like to remind you that we are now sending out our newsletters bi-monthly (ie: every second month) with a "mini" newsletter every alternate month. The mini newsletter highlights a course or event we would like to bring to your attention.
With all the holidays in April, we decided to wait until early May (when everyone would be back at their desks) before sending out this newsletter.
This month we feature The Dealdiva programme. The Dealdiva is fun, fabulous and a must for all women who negotiate deals - whether in their business or their personal lives.
A "deal" is defined by Encarta Concise English Dictionary as "a (business) transaction; an agreement, arrangement or transaction, usually one that benefits all parties involved". Think about the deals you, or the women you know, need to negotiate - from getting the kids to eat veggies, to staff terms and contracts, to buying or selling any items or services, to the more complex business transactions.
The Dealdiva equips women with the skills and expertise they need to immediately improve the profitability of their companies and their own finances. With all the uncertainty in the global markets, is it not time to ensure that you are able to negotiate the best possible deals?
Jean Slaughter - Editor
The Dealdiva Programme

Research recently conducted by Dr Linda Babcock (Economics Professor and Author) and Sara Laschever (Editor and Author) revealed some interesting, if alarming, information about women and negotiation. Women will go to great lengths to avoid negotiating. The impact of this is that women:
- are often so grateful to get a job offer that they are afraid to negotiate the salary package
- earn 25% less than men for doing the same job
- will pay premiums on big purchases to avoid negotiating
- come away with around 30% less in deals than men
- initiate negotiations four times less than men.
Did you know that if a woman fails to negotiate her first salary, the knock on effect of this is that by age 65, she will be around R5,0 million poorer than she should be? Scary! As Kim Meredith (CEO of The Dealmaker Programmes Company and Author of "Work Diva") puts it - "Women are their own worst enemies when it comes to looking after their personal interests".
Why are women so reluctant to negotiate? The essential reason is that women avoid conflict, and by its very nature, negotiation is conflict driven. The Dealdiva helps women to address conflict in a constructive and confident manner, making naturally timid women more assertive, and toning down the aggression of confrontational women.
The Dealdiva programme addresses the challenges women face when negotiating, be this in the business or personal context. The Dealdiva guarantees that each delegate will:
- be a more skilled negotiator of all kinds of transactions
- know exactly what they need to do to get the best possible deals
- be well on the road to achieving their business and personal financial goals for the rest of their lives!
The next The Dealdiva programme will take place in Johannesburg on 01 & 02 July 2009. As class size is limited, don't delay in booking your place - or a place for a woman you want to empower - as soon as possible. Please contact enquiries@thedealmaker.com or phone us on +27 11 440 0193 to secure a seat.
